Much, much better than our 1st SC bed!
Date:August 17, 2010
"This is our second SC bed. We got the first one over 15 years ago, it's sooooo old it doesn't even have a sleep number setting! The frimness could be set on either side, but no number for reference.
Now, we have had the "Performance Series" bed which was/is on sale at a GREAT price. The foundation on the new bed is vastly different from the first bed and eliminates the "noise" problem we had on the old bed.
The new bed is much more comfortable, breathable, etc.
My wife was beginning to get back aches with the old bed, now after a month with the new bed she has not had back discomfort one morning!
To sum it up, we liked the old SC bed, but we LOVE the new Performance Series bed, heck we even have a sleep number and wireless remote now!!! (Me 80/Wife70). I like a firm setting in the summer, it seems cooler, and a softer setting in the winter so I can "sink in" and be warmer.
We highly recommend the SC bed/system, especially the Performance Series Bed, the comfort and value can't be beat!

Glad we did it!
Date:August 14, 2010
"We purchased our special edition bed in May and are still amazed at the comfort for both of us. I'm a 35 and my wife is a 50. Mine went down five and hers went up five from the analysis in the store. I had been waking up with a stiff painful back every morning for a couple of years. My wife was satisfied with our old mattress. That's why I was a bit surprised when she and our 12 year old daughter returned from a week long visit to grandma's house and the first thing my wife said was, "Oh, I'm so glad to be back to my 50!" I knew that I now look forward to going to bed, but I didn't realize that my wife has slowly, completely fallen in love with our sleep number bed. My daughter lobbied nightly to sleep on my 35 side until we finally relented and allow her to have Friday night sleep over on the 35 side. We will be purchasing her one of her own in a few months. The only issue I have (and it's minor) is when I sit on the 35 side it sinks in quite deep, while the 50 side (obviously) seems more like a "normal" bed. I have read other reviews elseware that have had issues with pump units. I have been an electronics technician for 30 years and just like the manual states, I would recommend everyone purchase a surge protector. These can be bought for under ten dollars and if you keep the receipt and ever have a power related failure the surge protector manufacturer will pay for a new pump unit for you. Unfortunately, our power in America is not as clean as it used to be and a handful of surges can damage any electronic device. We have had no problems, but when a storm earlier this evening momentarily interrupted power to our home, I was happy to know that, like all of our electronics, our bed pump was protected. While both my wife and I found our perfect numbers quickly, I would suggest everyone read the manuel and make sure you follow the directions on finding your sleep number and then enjoy your comfortable "cloud of sleep" Thanks Select Comfort!"

Great Bed!
Date:August 13, 2010
"I have to say I really like this bed so far. After reading some of the reviews online I wasn't sure if I would be happy, but I'm happy to say that I am. This bed is a great value and I find it comfortable so far. I have never really had bad pain from sleeping so I can't really attest to whether it helps or not, but it has not caused me back pain either. I was basically looking for a bed that was more comfortable than the cinder block I was sleeping on before and could adjust to my mood.
People's preferences differ as can be seen by some of the negative reviews, so I would suggest going to a hotel and trying one out before making a purchase, because it does come with a hefty price tag. I would recommend this bed to others."

Excellent!!
Date:July 27, 2010
"To those who have left or are reading the negative comments, please let me assure you that once you find your right number, you will have NO back issues with this bed. I have had mine now for a year and a half. Occasionally if I've had a stressful day or overworked myself, I have to adjust it to keep my back from aching, but I always wake up refreshed. Don't get your sleep number at the store and then assume that it will be 100% accurate all the time.
I will never, EVER go back to a normal spring mattress again! The only issue we had with it was a slight bowing of one of the foundation pieces when we first got it. I noticed it after about a week of sleeping on it, and Customer Service was extremely helpful, getting it replaced within the week. No problems since!
Also, as an added bonus (on top of waking pain-free for the first time in over 20 years), the bed completely breaks down to allow for easy moving. When was the last time you fit your entire mattress into a hatchback to move it to a new apartment? We've gotten so used to this bed that when we travel, we specifically look for hotels that have Sleep Number beds. Absolutely the BEST investment we have ever made!"

Amazing Sleep
Date:July 23, 2010
"I have had a pillow top, memory foam, and now a Sleep Number. I bought the Special Edition in May '10, and it has been the best bed yet. It's truly the deepest sleep that I've ever had. My sleep number is 40, but I love that I can adjust the firmness based on how I feel that day. I play women's football, so it's great after a long practice or brutal game to crank up the number for my back. I constantly rave about this bed to my teammates.
My only complaint was the dual chamber dipped in the middle when I slept alone. I called customer service, and they immediately sent me a chamber lift. This foam piece worked like a charm.
I can't say enough good things about this bed. I just wish this great deal had been available at the time I bought mine."

Had one for 22 years
Date:June 6, 2010
"I sympathize with the reviewers who have not found the comfort they need and anticipated. We bought ours 22 years ago, so my husbands low back and neck pain could be helped.
I did notice that the negative reviews here had not had theirs for very long..(more than 3 months) I hope they will keep giving it a try.
The concept and final "number" you find for your body's needs can take time. It is like fine tuning a radio dial in a bad reception area (those of you that remember those dials).
Also, sometimes our bodies change or have particular inflammations, that may require readjusting.
(I was thinking of back and shoulders, but pregnancy came to mind! ha!, wish I had had one then!)
One issue is when one side likes soft, it tends to affect the other mattress, so may need to readjust again.
We have got it tuned and it works for us.
We have had our older model, (non digital or remote) 22 years. We brought it from CA with us in 1995 and been using here in OK since.
We have been saving for a newer model and believe it will be the last bed we every have to buy. I am sure we can adjust to the digital, I hope it is a responsive as the push button controls we have now. Will keep you posted.

I LOVE this bed!!
Date:June 6, 2010
"I am a suffer of severe lower back pain, and purchased this bed in hopes that I might be able to sleep through the night, well I am sleeping through the night for the first time in 3 years on my inner spring mattress I slept for maybe 2 to 3 hours then had to get up and walk around for 20 to 30 minutes then take my pain medication. If I did sleep more than 4 hours I had to have a family member to help me sit up before I could get out of bed.The Sleep number bed has helped me so much all I can say is Thank you for giving me a decent nights sleep.
The quality of the bed is good easy to set up the pump is quiet if it runs in the night I do not hear it, as far as noises like it squeaking I have never heard it make any noise at all, the price may have been a little high but I would pay any amount to have a good nights sleep.
I would recommend this bed to any one who has severe lower back pain, I have been able to cut back on my pain medications since I have had the bed and found the right number for me, it took me about 4 days to find the right number and the right position I have an adjustable base, I can not even imagine how I slept flat for so many years!! If you can I recommend the adjustable base as well the combo is unbeatable!!

great bed with adjustments
Date:May 31, 2010
"This bed felt like a cloud the minute I lay down on/in it. After less than a month my husband admitted his neck pain was less.
Only trouble has been that I'm a stomach sleeper with back injuries. Sleeping on anything more indented/concave/bowed than a board causes me some lower back pain. But boards and rock hard beds are very uncomfortable for other reasons (pressure points?).
Select Comfort had a solution for all this - foam inserts (shipped free of charge) that slip inside the mattress to lift up the dip in the center caused by the body's weight. This doesn't seem to interfere with the bed's cradling softness, and my husband is still sleeping pain free.
My chiropractor has had the equivalent of this bed for 7 years. He and his wife still love it and recommend it to everyone. This is what he emailed to me:
" ... The nice thing about their bed is that it feels very soft and comfy, but under that is whatever firmness of mattress you want. What is perfect is a soft but totally level sleeping surface, like a plank with something soft over it. Bad beds actually sag with softness and that is the worst."
He also said this:
"... the models with 1 to 2 inch foam are not adequate. The bed needs the 3" top piece foam to be what we have and love."
.
NOTE: Both P6 and Performance Series Special Edition beds have the 3" foam top."

"I have had this bed for two weeks and I have yet to sleep through the night. Although I have tried the recommended numbers, I am awoken during the middle of the night with lower back pain. I never expected this from a sleep number bed because I did not experience these issues with a typical innerspring mattress.
I purchased the bed because my parents and sister both have one and love it. However, it does not work for me. I would love to return this bed, but you can't do that with a special edition mattress. Therefore, I highly recommend anyone considering this bed think twice - unless you are a previous sleep number customer and you like this type of bed.
Anyways, I wish I had "listened" more to the online reviews than to my family. This is a costly mistake on my part, but after two weeks, I have decided to donate the bed to a worthy charity and find a mattress that will actually help me to sleep instead of keeping me from it."

Response from Sleep Number:By StephanieCustomer ServiceSeptember 22, 2010
Hello. My name is Stephanie. I am a member of Select Comfort's online Customer Service team. I am so sorry that you are experiencing issues with your new bed. However, I am confident that we can resolve this initial discomfort and get you comfortable! Initially, because the Sleep Number bed is quite different than a standard (innerspring) mattress, you may notice some discomfort as your body adjusts to the new bed. Lower back pain can occur for a number of reasons, but if you are just noticing now on your new Sleep Number bed, this indicates to us that you are most likely using a Sleep Number that is too high and too firm. This can cause pressure on your lower back, which is why you have discomfort. We recommend lowering the Sleep Number bed by 5 points and trying it for at least 3 to 5 nights. Changing the setting more frequently than this, or by more than 5 points at a time does not allow your body to properly adjust to the new setting. I am sure these tips will help you get comfortable. Please feel free to contact Customer Service if you have further concerns and we will be more than happy to help you. We can be reached at 1-888-411-2270.

Highly Disappointed
Date:May 23, 2010
"I am a disabled veteran who suffers with fibromyalgia, costochonditis, myofascial pain syndrome (neck & lower back) and arthritis. My Sleep Number Performance Series bed (Special Edition) was delivered six days ago. In my opinion, sleeping on this mattress is similar to sleeping on a raised air mattress. It is very uncomfortable and you can hear the screeching sound of every toss and turn which is annoying. According to their brochure, this model is recommended for people who suffer with fibromyalgia and arthritis. I cannot get any rest on this thing."

Response from Sleep Number:By StephanieCustomer ServiceSeptember 22, 2010
Dear Precious,
My name is Stephanie and I am a member of Select Comfort's customer service team. I wanted to apologize for the issues you are having with your new bed. Understandably, people who have pre-existing health issues may find adjusting to a new bed difficult. As a Sleep Number bed is much different than an innerspring bed, you may also find that there is an adjustment period. I am sure that we can help you to get comfortable. We recommend trying a Sleep Number for 3 to 5 nights. Once you have done this, we recommend raising or lowering the setting by 5 points only, depending on how your body feels. If you notice that you have stiffness, pain or discomfort in your lower back, we recommend trying a lower Sleep Number setting. If you notice discomfort in the upper back, shoulder or neck area, we recommend trying a higher Sleep Number setting. You may also want to consider the pillow you are using. Did you keep the pillows from your previous bed? If so, as your new Sleep Number bed is a different surface and your body is being supported differently, you may find that you need to try another pillow. We offer free pillow fittings at all of our retail stores to help you find the pillow that will work best for you. Good luck and please let us know if you need further assistance by calling Customer Service at 1-888-411-2270.
